Built in an area renown for Anasazi and Pueblo archeological ruins and artifacts, the sites context called for a material palette that responded to the local clay coloring and shale rock outcrops. With 180 degree views from the La Plata Mountains to the east, Mesa Verde National Park, and westward to Sleeping Ute Mountain, the house form needed to resolve multiple view exposures. A traditional Kiva form inspired the bar, replete with display of historical artifacts reclaimed and carefully reassembled by the client, set the centerpoint of a radial plan of porches that enveloped the house.
